Natural DIY Dandruff Remedies

Dandruff is embarrassing and can be frustrating to get rid of. It can affect any age, but is most common in children and teens. Fortunately, there are a number of home remedies you can use to rid yourself of those white flakes forever.

Sometimes dandruff is caused by not washing your hair enough. If going a day or two between washes, leaves you with a flaky dry scalp, this may mean it’s just time for a wash. Dandruff can also appear if you use a lot of dry shampoo, since it can dry out your skin. Since you don’t actually scrub and rinse with water when you use dry shampoo, it also means that you didn’t remove the dead skin cells on your scalp. Those dead cells are what contribute to your dandruff, so it’s important to at least rinse your hair regularly, even if you use a lot of dry shampoo.

Vinegar is one of the best treatments for dandruff. Simply rinsing your head with a mix of vinegar and water (about 2 tbsp vinegar and 6 tbsp water is a good mix) will help remove your dandruff.

Aloe Vera gel is a beneficial treatment option for severe dandruff, especially if you haven’t been able to avoid scratching and have irritated your scalp. Apply the gel before bed, then rinse well in the morning.

Ginger is a spice that has many uses. Besides just flavouring your food, it’s also great for motion sickness, and even dandruff. Grind up some raw ginger and mix with olive oil. Warm the mixture slightly and rub into scalp. This will not only help cure your dandruff, but nourish your hair too.

Baking soda and water can work great as a DIY shampoo, and can also reduce dandruff. Baking soda is gritty, which can mildly exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. To apply, mix baking soda with warm water and apply to your head in place of shampoo.

Apply olive oil to your scalp and hair and let it soak in for thirty minutes, before shampooing out. If you do this once a week, your hair and scalp will thank you.

An unusual idea is to apply fermented yogurt to your scalp and leave it in place for an hour or more. Rinse, and wash your hair normally with a mild shampoo.

Dry salt can also help exfoliate your scalp. Start with your hair dry, or just slightly damp and massage ordinary table salt into your scalp for at least two minutes. This might sound messy, and uncomfortable, but you may be surprised at how good it feels on your itchy scalp. If you have Epsom salts, those are even better. When you are done massaging, shampoo the salt out.

If you don’t want to massage something like salt into your scalp, just use your fingers. Make it a habit to spend at least five minutes massaging your scalp before you shower. Your fingertips will help exfoliate all those dead skin cells so they’ll wash out in the shower.

Consider adding more raw fruits and vegetables to your diet. Sometimes this can help your scalp become healthier from the inside out, and that will obviously improve your dandruff situation.

If your dandruff persists despite you trying a number of different remedies, you may need to make an appointment with your doctor. Dandruff in itself is not dangerous, or contagious, but there are other conditions that can masquerade as dandruff.
